Treatment of trauma and PTSD

Manuvision has specialized expertise in the treatment of trauma and PTSD. Based on research and evidence, we use body-therapeutic techniques to help restore balance in the nervous system.

Mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD are often rooted in trauma. In a Manuvision treatment for PTSD and trauma, we work with the body’s responses to trauma through the nervous system.

We stimulate activity in the parts of the nervous system that help keep the body in balance when it is in a state of alarm. When the vital parts of the nervous system are activated, breathing becomes freer, lung capacity expands, heart rate decreases, and the body no longer uses the same amount of energy to mobilize muscles and circulate adrenaline and cortisol through the bloodstream. With a balanced nervous system, the body is also able to activate the restorative processes necessary for healing itself.

Evidence-based treatment

Manuvision Body Therapy has been the focus of Denmark’s first research project on body therapy, conducted by Statens Institut for Folkesundhed (SDU) in collaboration with Region Hovedstadens Psykiatri. The study demonstrates a significant effect of our treatment for PTSD.

Manuvision therefore works evidence-based with the treatment of stress and trauma, as well as the physical and psychological conditions that trauma can lead to — from depression and anxiety to PTSD.

What is PTSD ?

PTSD – or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – is a stress condition that can arise after experiencing a situation in which one’s life felt threatened. Regardless of what triggered the condition — whether war, rape, assault, accidents, or severe childhood circumstances — the common denominator is that the body becomes locked in a traumatic state. This creates a distorted foundation for how a person relates to the world around them.

PTSD is rooted in trauma, and trauma shapes the way we react to and relate to our surroundings. The body is designed to create the best possible defense against danger, so if it has experienced a life-threatening situation, all survival mechanisms will be activated. This state of alarm can manifest as restlessness, racing thoughts, memory difficulties, social withdrawal, sleep disturbances, nightmares, anxiety, depression, dizziness, shortness of breath, digestive problems, and muscle and joint pain.

Many people experience flashbacks to the events that triggered the PTSD, suffer from nightmares, and develop extreme sensitivity to sensory impressions, making it difficult to function in daily life or in social settings. For many, this also involves feelings of shame, guilt, and inadequacy, which can lead to social isolation and depression.

How Do We Treat Trauma and PTSD?

In short, a Manuvision treatment addresses trauma through the body and by strengthening the nervous system’s ability to self-regulate. In the book “When the body is at war” we go through our approach to trauma treatment in detail.

Trauma fundamentally disrupts the ability to self-regulate impulses and emotions — and, consequently, the ability to respond appropriately in relationships. In treatment, we work on regulating the nervous system. By guiding attention into the body and releasing suppressed emotions, we help people affected by trauma train their self-regulation, enabling them to gain greater control over the impulses and automatic responses of their nervous system.

Manuvision body therapy has been the focus of the first research project in body therapy in Denmark, conducted by the National Institute of Public Health (SDU) in collaboration with the Capital Region of Denmark Psychiatry. The research results show that 6 months of Manuvision body therapy can reduce or completely eliminate PTSD symptoms in war veterans with PTSD. Read more: Research into Manuvision Body Therapy

book about trauma treatment

In the book “When the Body is at War” we gather the threads from 25 years of treatment practice with the experiences from the research project into the effect of Manuvision body therapy against PTSD, conducted by the Danish Institute of Public Health (SDU). We introduce our work with relationship and body awareness and the principles and techniques that can regulate the balance in the nervous system and create change in people exposed to trauma.
